Treatment Options for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Goals of Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
The goals of treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) include:
- Repairing the AAA in a timely fashion before it poses a high risk for rupture and complications
- Preventing rupture of the AAA
- Preserving the patient's quality of life
- Prolonging survival
There are two avenues of treatment that may be considered for treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms:
- Ongoing surveillance of the AAA to detect any changes in size or appearance
- Surgical intervention
If an abdominal aortic aneurysm is expanding rapidly (more than 1 cm. per year) or is showing signs of imminent rupture (e.g. severe, sudden onset of abdominal pain, gradual or severe drop in blood pressure, presence of a pulsating mass), the individual should seek immediate medical care since they may require urgent evaluation for possible surgical intervention.
