Treatment of Hereditary Hemochromatosis

The primary goal of treatment of hereditary hemochromatosis is to prevent damage to vital organs that can result from iron overload. Patients who already exhibit signs of organ damage due to prolonged exposure to high levels of iron are treated with the intention of preventing further damage. Compliance with dietary modifications to reduce the amount of iron ingested in the daily diet is of great importance. Hereditary hemochromatosis can usually be managed by a primary care physician however, if complications develop, the patient may have to be referred to a specialist.
