Diagnosis of Female Infertility
As mentioned previously, approximately 85% of couples attempting conception through regular, unprotected intercourse will be successful within 12-months. Infertility is, therefore, defined as 1-year of regular, unprotected intercourse during which a woman fails to conceive. In general, most experts agree that a diagnostic work-up to investigate the possible causes of infertility should be undertaken after 12-months without unsuccessful conception. More recently, some fertility specialists have proposed that an investigation as to the possible causes of infertility be undertaken after 6-months without successful conception. This recommendation is based upon the results of two large studies (one in China; the other in Europe) which found that, over a 12-month period, 80% to 90% of women attempting conception became pregnant during the first 6-months while only 10% to 20% became pregnant during the subsequent 6-months.
