Psychosocial Considerations
Infertility may be one of the most stressful experiences a woman faces in her lifetime. The frustration and despair can be overwhelming. Studies on infertile women indicate that symptoms of depression, hostility, and anxiety increase as duration of infertility increases.
Thus, it is helpful for many women to seek support and counseling from one or more available resources. These may include the health care team (physician, nurse, social worker), clergy, or a support group.
There are several resources in the community. One example is "Resolve" which offers information, advocacy, and support for people experiencing infertility. Services include a national telephone help-line, referrals to medical specialists, literature on the emotional and medical aspects of infertility, a member contact network, medical updates, adoption information, and support groups http://www.resolve.org.
