Diagnosis of Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Signs and Symptoms of Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) most commonly seek medical attention because of symptoms such as fatigue or shortness of breath, which result from underlying anemia (lower than normal red blood cell levels) caused by MDS. It has been estimated that about 85% of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes experience anemia.

Neutropenia (low white cell count) and thrombocytopenia (reduction in the number of platelets; the most common cause of bleeding disorders) typically occur in patients in the more advanced stages of MDS. Patients with neutropenia may be more susceptible to skin, sinus, lung, and urinary tract infections.

  • A symptom associated with sinus infection is nasal congestion.
  • Symptoms associated with lung infections may include coughing or shortness of breath.
  • Symptoms associated with urinary tract infections may include frequent urination or pain while urinating.
  • Symptoms associated with thrombocytopenia can include bruising easily, nosebleeds, and bleeding of the gums.
