Treatment of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

Goals of Treatment for Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

Treatment options for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) depend primarily upon the patient's age and phase of the disease. The goals of treatment for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia include:

  • Hematological Response - reducing the abnormally high white blood cell counts and maintaining it within the normal range.

  • Cytogenetic Response - reduction or elimination of the Ph chromosome from bone marrow cells.

  • Molecular Response - reduction or elimination of the abnormal BCR-ABL fusion gene from bone marrow cells.

In general, the treatment options for chronic myelogenous leukemia can be divided into the following two categories:

  • Non-transplantation therapies
  • Transplantation-based therapies.
