Treatment Options for Graves' Disease
The Role of Alternative Medicine in Graves' Disease
While treatments such as acupuncture, exercise, meditation, massage, and various mind-body therapies may provide comfort and relief of some symptoms, they are not a substitute for standard medical treatment of Graves' disease (GD).
Some patients report benefits from relaxation therapy since it reduces muscle tension, enhances blood circulation and promotes mental calmness. Some studies have linked stress with the onset or exacerbation of Graves' disease.
There are no studies to prove the efficacy or safety of many alternative therapies. It is important to notify your health care provider if you are using any alternative therapies, no matter how insignificant or benign they may seem.
There are certain foods that may be effective in hyperthyroidism by depressing the activity of the overactive thyroid gland. These foods include broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, spinach, turnips, soy, beans, and mustard greens. Refined foods, however, should be avoided, including dairy products, wheat, caffeine, as well as alcohol.
