Differential Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Other conditions may cause signs and symptoms that overlap with PCOS. These conditions must be taken into consideration and excluded before reaching a definitive diagnosis of PCOS. Other conditions that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of PCOS include:
- Diabetes
- Hypothalamic dysfunction
- Pituitary gland dysfunction
- Adrenal gland dysfunction or tumor
- Acromegaly
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia. ACOG recommends that all women with suspected PCOS be screened for 17-hydroxyprogesterone levels.
- Cushing's syndrome
- Ovarian failure
- Ovarian tumors
- Medication effects
- Pregnancy
- Thyroid disease
