Treatment Options for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Adolescence and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) usually begins in adolescence but may not be diagnosed for several years since many of the symptoms of PCOS overlap with normal physical adolescent development. Metabolic disturbances found in women with PCOS are also often found in adolescents, including functional ovarian hyperandrogenism.

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to eating disorders and issues of self image since PCOS can cause significant cosmetic disturbances. Many adolescents benefit from support groups and they derive motivation from them to carry out life-style changes such as diet modification and increased exercise. Girls also benefit from consulting with nutritionists who may offer concrete suggestions for healthy diets that can promote improvement of PCOS symptoms.
