Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Management of Ischemia
Patients with diabetic foot ulcers that may be attributed to peripheral vascular disease (ischemia) should be promptly referred to a vascular surgeon for further evaluation and testing. Evaluation of suspected peripheral arterial disease usually includes:
Ultrasound
- measurement of ankle pressures
- measurement of toe pressures
- duplex scanning
Imaging studies with contrast angiography
- digital subtraction angiography
- magnetic resonance angiography
- CT angiography
Treatment options for the management of peripheral arterial disease include:
- Vascular reconstruction to restore sufficient blood flow to the affected limb
- Angioplasty and stenting
- Hyperbaric oxygen treatments
