Signs and Symptoms of Polycystic Kidney Disease

The earliest symptoms of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) usually appear between the ages of 20 and 40 but can appear as early as childhood. Symptoms range from mild to severe and from temporary to persistent. The most common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the back and sides (between the ribs and hips)
  • Hypertension
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Polyuria - increased urine production due to the kidney's loss of ability to concentrate the urine
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
