New Developments in Polycystic Kidney Disease
Major advances in the understanding of the genetics and pathogenesis of autosomal dominant PKD have occurred within the past few years, enhancing the possibility of early detection and improved treatments in the future.
Laparoscopic nephrectomy is emerging as a viable treatment option for the surgical management of patients with ADPKD. Compared to open nephrectomy, the laparoscopic approach requires a shorter stay in hospital and leads to faster recovery.
Researchers are studying new ways to try to prevent or slow down the progression towards end-stage renal failure by treating the hypertension associated with ADPKD. This may be done by classes of drugs called ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, or statins.
Research is being conducted to test the effectiveness of agents that reduce the activity of growth factors in slowing down ADPKD and ARPKD cyst expansion.
