Treatment Options for Migraine Headache

Prognosis for Migraine Headache

The prognosis for people who suffer from migraine headaches is very good once the headaches have been brought under control with proper treatment. There are several pharmacological alternatives available for headache control and if one treatment plan is not effective, different medications or combinations can be tried until an effective plan is found. The duration, frequency, and intensity of headaches has also improved thanks to a number of preventive medications that are now available. In addition, migraine headaches tend to "wind down" with age and are not a lifelong condition.

It is very important for those who suffer with migraines to be patient until the right medication or strategy is found for controlling their headache. There may be a period of trial and error until the most effective abortive medication or combination of medications is established. Regarding preventive treatment, it may take 2-6 months until an effective drug is found and the process can be long and frustrating. There are nonpharmacologic strategies, such as leaving a stressful situation or lying down in a dark place (more are listed in the "Treatment" section) that the patient can use to attempt to control their headaches and each individual is encouraged to try different strategies to see what is effective for them.
