Quality of Life Issues in Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
Sleep Disturbances in Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
Sleep disturbances due to chronic, severe pain of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) can have a significant detrimental effect on quality of life. Sleep deficit can actually prolong pain for patients with RSD in addition to affecting mood, level of fatigue, and ability to function well in activities of daily living. It has been estimated that approximately 50-70% of people with chronic pain experience sleep disturbances. If sleep is an issue for the RSD patient, it is important to communicate this concern to their health care provider. Some techniques the patient may try include taking a nap early in the day instead of late afternoon and avoiding nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol. A variety of treatment options are available for RSD patients who experience chronic sleep disturbances, including medications and psychological interventions, and should be discussed with their health care provider.
