Treatment of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
Progression of Treatment for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
Following a diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), there are varying opinions among clinicians regarding the progression of treatment. The RSD Foundation published guidelines in 2003 suggesting that treatment should begin with education of the patient, encouragement to use the limb and physical therapy if needed, and any modalities of therapy that facilitate movement of the affected limb, such as sympathetic block or spinal cord stimulation. The primary goal of physical therapy should be teaching the patient how to use the limb correctly in daily activities. Hydrotherapy is especially helpful for the lower extremities and for this goal. Care should be taken to ensure that therapy for remobilization of the limb not be too aggressive.
The approach suggested by the expert panel of the Cleveland Clinic is described above in detail. For more information, please click on the following link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17134466
