Risk factors for Trigeminal Neuralgia

A risk factor is anything that increases the chances that a person will develop a particular disease or condition. Risk factors for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) include:

  • Age - average onset of TN occurs in people 50 years of age or older
  • Gender - women are 1.5 times more likely to develop TN than men
  • Family history of facial pain - approximately 5% of patients report a family history of facial pain
  • Multiple sclerosis - approximately 1% of patients with MS also suffer with TN
