Treatment Options for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Goals of Treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia

The two primary goals of treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) include:

  • Controlling the symptoms of TN
  • Treating the underlying cause of TN (in those cases where a cause has been identified)

In general, the following treatment options are available for patients with trigeminal neuralgia:

  • Drug therapy
  • Surgical therapy
  • Nerve blocks

Some doctors recommend that in addition to medical treatment, patients should also receive psychological counseling in order to minimize the disturbance that trigeminal neuralgia pain causes in their daily activities. Some patients also benefit from being treated at a pain clinic where there is a multi-disciplinary approach to coping with pain.
