Diagnosis of Peripheral Neuropathy

Differential Diagnosis of Peripheral Neuropathy

Some conditions whose symptoms may overlap with peripheral neuropathy include:

  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Nerve entrapment conditions (e.g., tarsal tunnel syndrome)

Other conditions producing symptoms similar to peripheral neuropathy which must be ruled out include:

  • Charcot's neuroarthropathy - progressive degenerative joint destruction which is usually seen in the foot and is frequently associated with diabetes
  • Fasciitis - inflammation of a fibrous band of tissue, called fascia, in the foot
  • Morton's neuroma - a pinched nerve that usually causes pain between the third and fourth toes
  • Osteoarthritis - degenerative joint disease
