Differential Diagnosis of Peripheral Neuropathy
Some conditions whose symptoms may overlap with peripheral neuropathy include:
- Bursitis
- Arthritis
- Tendonitis
- Nerve entrapment conditions (e.g., tarsal tunnel syndrome)
Other conditions producing symptoms similar to peripheral neuropathy which must be ruled out include:
- Charcot's neuroarthropathy - progressive degenerative joint destruction which is usually seen in the foot and is frequently associated with diabetes
- Fasciitis - inflammation of a fibrous band of tissue, called fascia, in the foot
- Morton's neuroma - a pinched nerve that usually causes pain between the third and fourth toes
- Osteoarthritis - degenerative joint disease
