Psychosocial Considerations and Quality of Life Issues in Peripheral Neuropathy

Quality of Life for Chemotherapy-Related Peripheral Neuropathy

The quality of life of cancer patients who develop chemotherapy-induced neuropathy is severely impacted not just from the pain and discomfort of neuropathy but because it is superimposed on all of the other issues that patients must cope with, such as other side effects of the chemotherapy, symptoms from the cancer itself, and emotional, psychological, and financial burdens they may be experiencing. Although the neuropathy cannot as yet be effectively treated, it may be helpful for the patient to be enrolled in a rehabilitation program where they receive physical and occupational therapy, pain management techniques such as yoga, biofeedback, relaxation, etc, and counseling (psychological and/or spiritual) to help cope with the emotional impact of neuropathy related to chemotherapy.
