Treatment Options for Peripheral Neuropathy

Goals of Treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy

The primary goals of treatment for peripheral neuropathy include:

  • Establishing and treating the underlying cause wherever possible
  • Relieving symptoms
  • Maintaining overall function of affected parts of the body
  • Preserving quality of life

Most therapies that are effective for neuropathic pain are not specific to the cause or type of the neuropathy and may be helpful for several types of neuropathy. Because peripheral neuropathy involves multiple systems in the body, there are typically several different types of specialists involved in management of the condition including a neurologist, endocrinologist, podiatrist, pain specialist, physical and/or occupational therapist, social worker, or vocational counselor.
