Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer

Differential Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer must be differentiated from other diseases and conditions that may produce similar symptoms. These include:

  • Cervicitis - inflammation of the cervix
  • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding
  • Cervical erosion (ectropion)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Endometrial (uterine) cancer
  • Side-effects of Intrauterine Device (IUD) for birth control
  • Endometrial hyperplasia
  • Fibroids (benign tumors in and around the uterus)
  • Atrophic vaginitis (due to lack of estrogen such as in postmenopausal women)
