Diagnosis of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Laboratory Evaluation in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

The following additional laboratory studies are helpful in the diagnosis, staging, and later management of lung cancer:

  • Sputum cytology - A sample of sputum (phlegm) is examined under the microscope to detect cancer cells. This test only identifies about 25% of lung cancer cases.
  • Complete blood count
  • Liver Function Tests (LFTs)
  • Blood chemistries
  • Platelet count
