Treatment Options for Prostate Cancer

Monitoring Following Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Men who have undergone curative treatments for prostate cancer, such as radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy, are at risk of relapse. Incidence, site and timing of relapse may be suggested by the Gleason Score, the initial PSA level, and the stage of disease when diagnosed. Although there is no standard for monitoring after treatment, it is recommended that patients be followed at 3 month intervals with PSA level, laboratory monitoring and digital rectal examination during the first year, every 6 months for the following 4 years, then yearly.
