New Developments in Tongue Cancer
Clinical studies are underway to evaluate the benefit of twice-daily radiation treatments rather than once daily, as well as the use of heat or medications to make cancer cells more sensitive to radiation (radiosensitizers).
Research is being conducted to evaluate the role of tumor markers (such as p53) that can facilitate early detection of head and neck cancers and to determine which tumors are most likely to respond to therapy.
New methods of administering chemotherapy are being studied such as intra-arterial chemotherapy which delivers drugs via arteries that are feeding the cancer, and intra-lesional chemotherapy which injects drugs directly into the tumor.
New surgical procedures are being developed for reconstruction of the tongue in patients who have undergone tongue cancer surgery.
