Prognosis for Thyroid Cancer
Prognosis for Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma
Age at the time of diagnosis also appears to be a major prognostic indicator for survival in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Younger patients (under age 40) have an estimated disease-specific survival of about 95% as compared to only about 65% for patients older than age 40. The 10-year disease-specific survival for younger patients under age 40 is approximately 75% as compared to only about 50% for patients older than age 40. The stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis is also an important prognostic indicator of survival in patients with MTC. In general, the estimated relative 5-year survival rates by Stage for patients with MTC is as follows:
Stages I and II = greater than 97%
Stage III = 78%
Stage IV = 24%
