Diagnostic Testing for Liver Cancer
Fine needle aspiration - A very fine, thin needle is used to remove a sample of cells from the area of the tumor.
Core biopsy - A hollow, large-core needle is used to obtain a piece of tissue from the area of the tumor.
Laparoscopy - During this procedure, a biopsy of the liver is performed by inserting a small, lighted instrument called a laparoscope or endoscope through a small incision made in the abdomen and a piece of the liver tumor is removed.
Laparotomy - This is an open surgical procedure in which an incision is made into the abdominal cavity and a sample of liver tissue is removed from the area of the tumor.
