Questions to Ask Your Doctor about Childhood Asthma
- What is the cause of my child's asthma?
- What evaluation is necessary to establish the diagnosis?
- What side effects should be expected from the medications?
- What ongoing monitoring is necessary to assess the effectiveness of the treatment?
- What plan should be followed if symptoms worsen?
- Will my child eventually "outgrow" asthma?
- What resources are available for support and education?
If symptoms are not improving with treatment, the following questions may uncover issues needing further attention:
- Is something in the environment (home, work, school, etc) causing the symptoms?
- Are the medications not being taken properly or the inhalers used correctly?
- Do the medications need to be changed?
- Could the problem be something other than asthma?
