Questions to Ask Your Doctor about Childhood Asthma

  • What is the cause of my child's asthma?
  • What evaluation is necessary to establish the diagnosis?
  • What side effects should be expected from the medications?
  • What ongoing monitoring is necessary to assess the effectiveness of the treatment?
  • What plan should be followed if symptoms worsen?
  • Will my child eventually "outgrow" asthma?
  • What resources are available for support and education?

If symptoms are not improving with treatment, the following questions may uncover issues needing further attention:

  • Is something in the environment (home, work, school, etc) causing the symptoms?
  • Are the medications not being taken properly or the inhalers used correctly?
  • Do the medications need to be changed?
  • Could the problem be something other than asthma?
