Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of ADHD include:
Hyperactivity:
- Always moving
- Talks incessantly
- Dashes around
- Cannot sit still
- Fidgets
- Roams around a room touching everything
- Taps feet or pencils
- Older children and adults also report feeling restless internally and always needing to be busy or doing several things at once.
Impulsivity:
- Acts before thinking about consequences
- Blurts out inappropriate comments
- Interrupts others who are speaking
- Acts impulsively
- Lacks restraint
- Has emotional outbursts
- Has a hard time waiting for a turn in a game
- Grabs and hits when can't get what they want
- Makes choices with small immediate gain rather than greater reward which may be delayed (especially older children and adults)
Inattention:
- Gets bored with tasks very quickly but can concentrate if enjoying the activity
- Daydreams
- Easily confused and distracted
- Moves slowly
- Has a hard time understanding directions
- Makes many mistakes in school work
- Loses things
- Rarely impulsive or hyperactive
- Appears to onlooker as if they're working hard and sitting quietly
- Gets along with other children better than children with hyperactivity-impulsivity
- Does not call attention to him/herself
- Tends to be overlooked by teachers since they're not viewed as "troublemakers"
- Has a hard time completing tasks
- Disorganized
