Questions to ask your doctor

Questions can be adapted to refer to a parent asking for a child or an adult asking for him/herself.

  • What type of ADHD does my child have?
  • Could this be another condition rather than ADHD?
  • Does my child need to be tested for other psychiatric conditions?
  • Should my other children be tested for ADHD?
  • What is the difference between the medications recommended for ADHD?
  • Which medication is most appropriate for my child?
  • What are the side effects of this medication? If they appear should I stop the medication immediately or first call you?
  • What improvements should I expect to see in my child on this medication?
  • Are there any common over-the-counter medications that should not be taken while my child is taking this ADHD medication?
  • Would my child benefit from behavioral therapy? Cognitive-behavioral therapy? Psychotherapy?
  • What is the likelihood that my child will outgrow ADHD?
  • What is the progression of ADHD I should expect to see in my child as long as he/she is being treated?
  • What is the prognosis for my child?
  • How should I change my home environment to help my child? Should I and my family be receiving help (such as counseling) to deal with our ADHD child?
  • Would I benefit from joining a support group of other parents with ADHD children?
  • Will you be available for consultation with teachers if they have questions?
  • Does insurance cover all of the treatment for ADHD? Are there any limits of coverage?
  • Are there any complementary medicine treatments that are effective for ADHD?
  • Should my child be seen by a mental health professional?
  • What special services (educational and other) is my child eligible for due to their disability?
  • Should I be requesting a school evaluation for my child to determine their level of functioning and what special services are needed?
