The Role of Complementary Medicine in ADHD
Although theories abound regarding complementary treatments for ADHD, none have been proven to be effective in rigorous testing and none have been approved for treatment of ADHD by any authoritative institution or organization.
Some of these techniques for treating ADHD include:
- Interactive Metronome Training - a metronome produces a rhythmic beat which the person with ADHD tries to match with hand or foot tapping. This is thought to improve motor timing and planning.
- EEG Biofeedback - the individual is taught to increase the arousal in the frontal brain area. In some people, biofeedback training appears to improve attention and reduce hyperactivity/impulsivity.
- Optometric Vision Training
- Chiropractic
- Chelation Therapy to reduce levels of lead in the blood
- Sugar-free/additive-free/gluten-free diets
- Homeopathy
- Auditory Nerve Stimulation
