Introduction to Bipolar Disorder
Hospitalization for Bipolar Disorder
Many people with bipolar disorder are hospitalized at some point. They may vehemently object to being hospitalized because they do not have good judgment while the problem is acute. Hospitalization is considered if:
- Person is suicidal, homicidal, or aggressive
- Severe dysfunction requiring 24 hour monitoring
- There is comorbid substance abuse
- There is an unstable underlying medical condition
- The patient requires close observation for reaction to medication
