Diagnosis of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Other Conditions Associated with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may develop other psychological conditions that can exist together with OCD. The most common co-existing condition that affects people with OCD is depression which has been estimated to occur in about 55% of OCD patients. Other co-existing conditions that may occur together with OCD include:

  • Phobias
  • Panic attacks
  • Anorexia and/or bulimia
  • Alcohol and/or drug abuse
  • Tourette's syndrome
  • Schizophrenia

The diagnostic evaluation of patients with suspected OCD should also include careful screening for any co-existing conditions and, if present, appropriate treatment should be instituted to manage these co-existing conditions together with the OCD.
