Treatment Options for Fibromyalgia
Complementary and Alternative Treatments for Fibromyalgia
The goal of complementary and alternative medicine therapies in the management of patients with fibromyalgia are to relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve coping mechanism. Some patients with fibromyalgia have noted improvements in fibromalgia symptoms after using these therapies. In general, the strenght of the evidence supporting the beneficial effects of complementary and alternative medicine therapies varies. Cognitive behavioral therapy, in particular, has been found to be effective in randomized, controlled clinical trials for reducing pain and improving overall function in patients with fibromyalgia. There is also evidence from some randomized, controlled clinical trials supporting the beneficial effects of relaxation techniques, biofeedback, and hypnosis in people with fibromyalgia. The results of studies evaluating the effectiveness of acupuncture in fibromyalgia have so far been mixed and more research is necessary before any definitive conclusions can be reached. Biologically-based therapies (e.g., dietary modification; herbal products; and nutritional supplements) have not been adequately evaluated in people with fibromyalgia. Patients with fibromyalgia who are considering using these therapies are urged to speak with their health care provider regarding the potential benefits as well the potential risks associated with the use of the products.
