Lifestyle Modifications and Quality of Life for Scleroderma
Skin Care and Conditioning in Scleroderma
It is important to keep skin conditioned and moisturized at all phases of disease activity. In addition, protecting the skin is of utmost importance. Some suggestions include:
- Moisturizing lotions (hydrophilic) and oils to prevent skin from drying out
- Using warm, not hot, water for bath and shower
- Adding baby oil to bath water
- Using mild soaps that do not contain perfume or harsh chemicals
- Using a humidifier in cold weather to maintain a comfortable level of relative humidity to prevent dry skin (be sure to clean your humidifier frequently to avoid buildup of mold)
- Always wear protective gloves when using any cleaning agents
- Avoid putting pressure on areas where calcium deposits have formed under the skin
