Quality of Life Issues and Psychosocial Considerations in Sjogren's Syndrome
Lifestyle Modifications
Lifestyle modifications which may be helpful to overall comfort of the patient with Sjogren's syndrome and may improve the quality of life include:
Avoid or minimize exposure to:
- smoke
- low humidity
- forced hot air heating systems
- excessive air conditioning
If you smoke...STOP because smoking exacerbates the symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome
- Use humidifiers to increase the comfort of your home or office environment. Remember...it is very important to clean the humidifier daily to prevent accumulation of germs.
- Add leafy plants to your environment since they help to promote moisture in the air
- Increase fluid intake by frequently drinking fluids or by sucking on ice chips
- Keep sugar-free gum close by and chew often
- Suck on highly flavored lemon lozenges that helps promote stimulation of saliva
- Keep lip salve or jelly available to prevent and treat dry cracked lips
- Use glasses with side panels or goggles when you go outside to block the wind from drying out your eyes
- Use aqueous creams and emollients rather than soap when washing
- Following a bath or shower, blot the skin dry leaving some moisture on your skin and immediately apply a moisturizing cream
- Wearing loose clothing is more comfortable for Sjogren's syndrome patients who may be suffering from skin conditions
- Schedule dental visits 2-3 times a year for teeth cleaning and evaluation
- Rinse your mouth with water several times a day. Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes which may add to the dryness of the mouth.
- After each meal, brush your teeth gently but thoroughly
- Minimize sugary foods. If you do eat or drink a sugary product, brush your teeth and rinse your mouth out immediately afterwards.
- Floss regularly and inspect your mouth daily for any sores, redness, or bleeding. See a dentist if you notice any changes in your mouth.
