Quality of Life Issues and Psychosocial Considerations in Sjogren's Syndrome
The impact of Sjogren's syndrome on the quality of life is quite significant due to the multitude of functions that are affected, particularly dry mouth and dry eyes. Sjogren's syndrome takes a toll on the physical, psychological, economic, and social aspects of a person's daily life and by extension, their families and friends. For example, a Sjogren's patient suffering from dry eye may be limited by the physical environments that aggravate their condition (e.g. air conditioned places) and so they may refrain from going out with friends. A patient suffering from dry mouth may withdraw from family and friends due to the embarrassment of difficulties such as not speaking clearly or experiencing bad breath. In addition, the Sjogren's patient's self-perception may undergo changes that can lead to or exacerbate depression, or anxiety. It is important for the patient with Sjogren's syndrome to address these and any other issues that are distressing to them with team of health professionals.
