Treatment Options for Osteoporosis

Fall Prevention

Elderly people in general are at high risk for accidental falls for a variety of reasons including impaired vision, poor balance, and muscle weakness. Falls in the elderly are of particular concern because of the significantly increased risk of fractures. Prevention of falls is, therefore, a major objective in the management of patients with osteoporosis.

Recommendations for reducing the risk of accidental falls in people with osteoporosis include:

  • Physical therapy to improve muscle strength and balance
  • Ambulatory aids, such as canes and walkers, to provide stability while walking
  • Wearing shoes with good traction (rubber soles) to prevent slips on slick or wet surfaces
  • Installing grab-bars in the shower and near the toilet
  • Placing non-skid mats under area rugs to prevent slipping and falling
  • Removing "clutter" from floors in all areas of the home that present a tripping and falling hazzard
  • Using special orthoses called "hip protectors" to reduce the risk of hip fractures in the event of an accidental fall.
