Treatment Options for Spondylolisthesis

Recovery after Surgery

Following surgery, the patient may be immobilized for twenty-four hours and given analgesics as needed. It is important for the patient to begin breathing deeply and walking soon after surgery. Walking prevents the formation of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a post-surgical complication due to lying down for a prolonged period of time. Patients may need extra pain medications initially to perform these activities. Most patients stay in the hospital for a few days and return to work within 6-7 months. A post-operative rehabilitation program is important during which the patient is taught how to exercise effectively and safely and resume activities of daily life. During recovery from surgery, it is important to avoid heavy lifting, high impact sports (e.g., football), or exercise (e.g., running or aerobics). A postoperative appointment is typically scheduled for 4-6 weeks post-surgery at which point the surgeon may repeat X-rays to assess the success of the fusion surgery. Mild pain with movement may continue for a few weeks.
