Treatment Options for Meniere's Disease

Treatments for Tinnitus in Meniere's Disease

There are several treatment modalities that may be used in an attempt to cope with tinnitus. These include:

  • Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) - conditioning the patient to the tinnitus through use of masking devices that mask the tones of tinnitus
  • Devices for electrical stimulation - involves small electrical currents outside the ear
  • Cochlear implantation may be considered for patients who have lost all or most of their hearing in the affected ear. • Biofeedback
  • Cognitive therapy which treats the emotional response to tinnitus but not the tinnitus itself
  • Medication - there are no specific medications available that reduce tinnitus. Antidepressants may be helpful for tinnitus in patients who also suffer from depression or anxiety.
  • Self care, such as:

    • Controlling blood pressure
    • Avoiding stimulants such as caffeine or tobacco
    • Reduce anxiety
    • Exercise
    • Avoid aspirin products
