Diagnosis of Erectile Dysfunction

Laboratory Evaluation of Erectile Dysfunction

There are no specific blood tests that can diagnose erectile dysfunction (ED). Certain blood tests, however, may be performed to determine if there are any underlying physiological abnormalities that may be the cause of ED. These blood tests may include:

  • Fasting blood glucose - to test for diabetes
  • Cholesterol and lipid levels - to test for atherosclerosis ("hardening" of the arteries that can lead to heart attack and stroke)
  • Complete blood count
  • Serum prolactim and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels - these tests are performed if the patient has hypogonadism
  • Thyroid function tests - measuring levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine
  • Prostate specific antigen - to screen for prostate cancer
  • Urinalysis
